Warning: Emails sent misusing the name Tyler Hill and the firm name Sullivan & Cromwell MNP LLP

Emails and documents have been sent misusing the name Tyler Hill and the firm name Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in relation to signing a confidentiality agreement via the legitimate platform DocuSign.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen an email and document purporting to be sent on behalf of 'Sullivan & Cromwell LLP' and 'Tyler Hill' in relation to signing a confidentiality agreement via the legitimate platform DocuSign. The email seen by the SRA, specifically appeared with the sender's name 'Michael Mapes' displaying the sender email address 'sign@ds-n3c.com'. We have been made aware that in other instances, the sender email address was not displayed.

The email seen by the SRA stated that the recipient is being added to a 'clean room' to work with Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and requested that they sign a confidentiality agreement.

After signing, the recipient was instructed to call 'Tyler Hill' using the telephone number '+1 646 494 5286' which is provided in a partner bio profile attached to the scam email. On one occasion, when the recipient called the telephone number, the recipient was requested to provide further details to access the 'clean room,' requiring them to add a new account to their Outlook.

The confidentiality agreement quoted the genuine firm's website, the firm's New York office address 125 Broad Street, New York, NY, 10004-2498, and the telephone number +1 212 558 4000. The fax number '+1(212)558-4001' and 'DX 14920 New York 2' quoted in the confidentiality agreement are not connected to the genuine firm.

Any business or transaction through the email address 'sign@ds-n3c.com' or through the telephone number '+1 646 494 5286' referred to in the alert above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Sullivan & Cromwell MNP LLP (SRA ID 308712). The firm's genuine email domain is @sullcrom.com.

The SRA also authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Tyler Hill (SRA ID 7011967).

Sullivan & Cromwell MNP LLP have confirmed that neither they nor Tyler Hill have any connection to the email address 'sign@ds-n3c.com' or telephone number '+1 646 494 5286' mentioned in the alert above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
