Warning: Email sent misusing the name Mark Baker claiming to from 'Mark & Associates Legal'

An email has been sent to a member of the public misusing the name of a genuine solicitor in relation to a fraudulent inheritance scheme.

What is the scam?

An email has been sent to a member of the public misusing the name of a genuine solicitor (see below) claiming to work at a firm called 'Mark & Associates Legal'.

The email claims the recipient has been appointed the sole beneficiary of a £1,963,920.00 GBP estate and requests personal details to begin paperwork.

The email was sent from mbaker@markassociatelegal.co.uk and provides the telephone numbers: +44 (0) 7440 695 683 and +44 (0) 741 756 2730.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Mark & Associates Legal'.

 Any business or transaction through the above email address or website is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates three genuine solicitors called Mark Baker.

The genuine solicitors Mark Baker (SRA number 272903) and Mark Baker (SRA number 432420) have confirmed that they do not have any connection to the email referred to in the above alert.

Mark Baker (SRA number 7756) is believed to not be involved with the email referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means.
