Warning: Documents misusing the name and address of Equal Justice Ltd

Emails and a document have been sent misusing the name and address of Equal Justice Ltd.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that emails and a document have been sent to members of the public from an individual called David Elivato purporting to work for Equal Justice Ltd.

The document is a purported contract for services to assist in recovering funds fraudulently obtained.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual named David Elivato.

Any business or transaction through David Elivato who is purporting to work at Equal Justice Solicitors is not undertaken by a firm or a solicitor authorised by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors Equal Justice Ltd with an SRA ID 420325. Its office address is Unit 11, Siddeley House, 50 Canbury Park Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 6LX.

The genuine firm has confirmed that it does not have any genuine and intended connection to the document referred to in the above alert. The genuine firm has also confirmed that it does not employ anyone with the name of David Elivato.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
