Checking and validate your degree

Who can apply

Any aspiring solicitors who already has a degree or equivalent level 6 qualification. Find what counts as a degree.

If you are a solicitor apprentice, you do not need to complete this application.

What you we will need

Our third-party validation service, Atlantic Data will assess UK and international degrees or equivalent qualifications against the UK level 6 qualifications criteria.

You will do this through mySRA, and you will need to provide this information:

  • full name (if you qualification is in an alternative name, you will need to confirm this within the application and provide evidence such as a marriage certificate etc)
  • university/institute name
  • course name
  • classification (result)
  • qualification type
  • enrolment and graduation years
  • qualification certificates, transcripts or documentation
  • student ID number.

UK and Ireland degrees

Level 6 qualifications

  • Degree apprenticeship
  • Degree with or without honours - for example Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Law (LLB)
  • Graduate certificate
  • Graduate diploma

Level 7 qualifications

  • Integrated master's degree, for example Master of Engineering (MEng)
  • Master's degree, for example Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc)
  • Postgraduate certificate
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • Postgraduate diploma

Level 8 qualifications

  • Doctorate, for example Doctor of Philosophy (PhD or DPhil)

International degrees

If you have an international degree from outside the UK, you will need to provide the same information as the UK degrees (please see above). Atlantic Data will do a compatibility check to see if it is equivalent to a UK level 6 degree.

If you have a UK qualification that is a level 6 or above, such as a master's degree, please use this one when applying rather than your undergraduate degree.

Please note that this validation check does not confirm if your degree was taught or assessed in English or Welsh. Therefore, for applicants with an SQE2 exemption, you cannot use the results as evidence of your English or Welsh language proficiency.

Fees

  • Validating any of the UK and Ireland qualifications listed above will cost £36.
  • Validating other UK and Ireland level 6 equivalent qualifications (such as a level 9 in Scotland) will also cost £36.
  • Validating an international degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification) will also cost £36.

For all validations, please be aware that some institutes may charge additional fees to verify your qualification.

You pay all fees direct to Atlantic Data when you apply for your check and validation.

Making your application

You will need to make your application by applying online in mySRA.

First, you will need to create an account. If you already have a mySRA account, you will need to log in.

Once logged in, select 'Start new applications' on the homepage. The application is called 'Apply to check that your qualification or work experience is equivalent to a degree'.

Once started, if you need to find your draft application, it will be in 'My profile' under 'Applications and documents'.

You may find it useful to have this guidance open in a separate device or browser window to help you complete the check.

Atlantic Data aim to provide an answer within 10 working days. This may be longer for non-UK degrees due to the additional processes and communication required with the institute.
