Warning: Email Addresses, WhatsApp messages and website misusing the name and details of CG Law Ltd (trading as CG Law)

Email addresses, WhatsApp messages and the website 'www.cg-law.net' are falsely purporting to belong to CG Law Ltd (trading as CG Law) misusing its name and details in relation to recovering lost cryptocurrency funds.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been notified that email addresses and WhatsApp messages are falsely purporting to belong to a genuine firm of solicitors (see details below) misusing its name and details.

The email addresses falsely purporting to be for the genuine firm of solicitors (see details below) were 'miastavros@cg-law.net' and 'chris@cgdefence.com'.

The WhatsApp messages were sent from '+44 7347 556058', a 'Mia Stavros' purporting to be a 'Lawyer' from CG Law, misusing the trading name for the genuine firm of solicitors (see details below).

From the documents seen by the SRA, the recipient was requested to pay a conversion fee to assist with recovery of the cryptocurrency funds. The SRA has also seen a document sent as part of the scam bearing the name of a bank purporting to be genuine, claiming to have received a request for the transfer of cryptocurrency funds.

The SRA has also been informed of the website 'www.cg-law.net' falsely claiming to be for the genuine firm of solicitors misusing its name, SRA number and genuine address (see details below). The website provides the telephone numbers '+41 (77) 924-59-24', '+44 (7448) 837-607' and the email address 'info@cg-law.net'. The website claims there are multiple 'Lawyers' working at this firm including 'Mia Stavros' purporting to be a 'Chief Recovery Counsel'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate any individual with the name 'Mia Stavros'.

Any business or transactions through the email addresses, WhatsApp number or website and its contact details described above are not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised or regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called CG Law Ltd (trading as CG Law) (SRA number 654306). The firms head office address is 12 Hay Hill, London, W1J 8NR. The genuine email domain of the firm is @cglaw.co.uk, and the telephone number is 02071935316. The firm's genuine websites are www.cglaw.co.uk and www.cglawdefence.co.uk.

The genuine firm has confirmed that it does not have any connection to the individual 'Mia Stavros', email addresses, contact details, documents or website referred to in the above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
