Emails are being sent from an individual purporting to be from Gowen & Stevens LLP.
What is the scam?
Emails are being sent from an individual purporting to be from Gowen & Stevens LLP. The individual purporting to be from the firm is using an email address with the domain @gowenandsteven.com. They are also claiming to use a direct dial number of 020 8661 8784 and provided false bank details for payment that relate to a company with a different name.
Any business or transaction through the email address or telephone number above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Gowen & Stevens LLP.
The firm's head office is based at 5 Mulgrave Chambers, 26-28 Mulgrave Road, Sutton, SM2 6LE.
The genuine firm's telephone number is 020 8661 8611. All emails from the firm use the domain @gowenandstevens.com (with an 's' at the end of the firm name).
The genuine firm have confirmed that they do employ a genuine conveyancing executive named Tracey Morris.
The genuine firm has confirmed that neither the firm nor their genuine Tracey Morris has any genuine connection to the email address/domain @gowenandsteven.com or the emails/details referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
