A letter has been sent claiming to be from 'David J. Matteo' of 'David J. Matteo Law Firm'.
What is the scam?
The SRA has been informed that a letter has been sent from an individual claiming to be 'David J, Matteo'. The letter falsely claims that David J Matteo is a 'lead attorney and insurance broker' and 'solicitor/insurance broker/tax advisor' at 'David J Matteo Law Firm'. The letter refers to an unclaimed life insurance policy worth £16.8m and requests the recipient's consent to claim the proceeds which would be shared equally..
The letter includes links to a website at 'www.davidjmatteo.co.uk' and an email address info@davidjmatteo.uk.
The following address and telephone numbers are also provided in the letter: 9th Floor, 70 St Mary Axe, London, EC3A 8BE, 0203 0006992 / 07438992449
Any business or transaction through the website ''www.davidjmatteo.co.uk'', the email address 'info@davidjmatteo.uk', the postal address 9th Floor, 70 St Mary Axe, London, EC3A 8BEA or the telephone contact numbers '0203 0006992 / 07438992449’ is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA does not authorise and regulate a genuine firm of solicitors by the name of David J Matteo Law Firm or a solicitor by the name of David J Matteo.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
